Print workshop 1

Notes taken from Fridays Print work shop....
Over the next few sessions the group have chosen to recap on
1. Preflighting
2. Trapping screen printing
3. Finishing e.g spot varnishes etc
4. Creating PDF (booklet printing) normally I use Adobe Acrobat Pro.

Recap of Indesign for this year
when setting up a new document consider how it will be printed? and the size of the finished piece.
Always set bleed amount. (standard 3mm)
only click facing pages if it is a book design.
key 'W' for print preview
Use guide lines and type in specific measurement coordinates for positioning, is a must!

Considerations when importing Photoshop and Illustrator documents.
PS
1. Size (Size up images to be smaller then page)
2. Resolution 300 dpi for print
3. File type - Indesign is TIF or PDS
4. Colour mode CMYK GREYSCALE DUOTONE etc but not RGB for print
AI
Resolution is not needed for illustrator because the software doesn't use pixels.
1. Format A1 etc
just copy and paste paths
2. Colour modes CMYK or spot colour.

Part 2
Use of Master pages
commonly used for page numbering and if there is anything you want to include that is consistent, by default every new page will be based on this master page.

Type- Insert special character - Hyphens and dashes - Em dash or En dash
- Markers - current page number
A -for A master, hold alt to duplicate and will come up as numbers.

apple +shift key and click to unblock master key.
Create new master page click and drag

Part3
STYLE SHEETS
Formatting paragraph spacing to show hidden characters.

4.233mm standard gutter (12pt)

Some Notes from writing by Steve Caplin (Working smarter with text in Indesign CS5)

Text Frames before CS5
We can split text boxes in to multiple columns, by using the options bar. When the text box in made wider, the two columns widen to fill the full width of the space. When you are designing to a grid layout, through, you need to maintain the column width. In the past, this involved making the text box wider and then changing the number of columns.
Snap frames to fixed column widths
A new item i the text frame options dialog lets you set a fixed column width you've already used. This means you can change from two- column box to three with a single action by dragging out the width.
Balance words across columns
You can also check the new balance columns box in the text frame options dialog to make Indesign automatically reflow the text so it finishes flush at the bottom of the words. This will override the actual text box height.
Justification on the last column
When you choose Vertical Justification as the text fixing method, the defaut behaviour is to fit the first two columns of type according to the leading value you've set then spae out the final column. With the balance columns option checked, however all the type is spaced out evenly, right across ll the columns in the text box.
Different treatments for headlines and body copy
A new feature in Indesign is the ability to spread text across multiple columns using the simple pop-up menu on the options bar. curiously, this appears for the character section of the options bar, and not for the paragraph section.
Words get in the way
